Voting on the Belhar Confession

Seattle Presbytery

Text from the January 10, 2011 SeaPres News Update:

Don't forget that at next week's Presbytery meeting we will, among other things, be voting on whether or not to include the Belhar Confession in our Book of Confessions. Copies of this (as well as the documents being voted on in the March and May meetings) have been sent to every pastor and voting commissioner within the presbytery.

If you have not received a copy, or would like more information about the Confession, below are a handful of resources (including the text of the Confession) which you may find helpful to read before attending the meeting:

Click here for the text of the Belhar Confession (from PCUSA)
Click here to see a video that, while pro-Belhar, provides a basic primer for the Confession, as well as the context in which it was written (from the Reformed Church of America)
Click here to see why the Korean Presbyterian Council supports the Confession (from PCUSA)
Click here to see why one pastor does not support the Confession (from the Gospel Coalition)
Click here to see three arguments against the Confession (posted on the Seattle Presbytery website by a member of the presbytery)
Click here to visit the - wait for it - Belhar Facebook group.

These resources are not intended to tell you how to vote, but rather to help you become informed about the issue. There are many other resources available, with many perspectives and arguments both for and against. The above links are simply the ones that have been posted to the Seattle Presbytery website .... except the Facebook group. That one was included simply to confirm anything can be found on Facebook these days!

Our hope is that you will read the Confession, perhaps browse some of the links we have offered, do any further research needed to help you understand your position, and above all - PRAY. And then bring your prayerful decision to the Presbytery meeting, and vote.
