S.H.I.F.T. will be providing the coffee for the presbytery meeting on March 15th and will be at the information table ready to tell you more about FAIR TRADE. Please stop by and say hello.
S.H.I.F.T. stands for Sharing, Healing Implementing Fair Trade. It’s a year-long campaign being undertaken by the Youth Mission Team of St Andrew Presbyterian Church to tell the world about the benefits of FAIR TRADE products.
In fall of last year The St Andrew Presbyterian Church Youth Mission Team began investigating life in Central America. We discovered poverty as well as tough economic and environmental conditions.
Given our call as Christians to love our neighbors and creation we wondered how we might stand lovingly beside those who live and work in Central America.
We decided that as consumers of products from Central America we have some responsibilities. Most importantly we can try to make sure that those who plant and grow our coffee, tea and bananas are given a fair price for their harvest and have the kind of working conditions that will allow them to provide for their families and take care of their land.
We investigated FAIR TRADE products and decided that by buying FAIR TRADE we are better able to help our neighbors outside of the US who produce some of the things we enjoy.
We think the church has a special responsibility to work for this kind of change and so we have asked the session of St Andrew to support the use of FAIR TRADE and we plan to embark on a year-long educational campaign or “World Tour” called the SHIFT. The aim of this tour is to tell people about what we think are the benefits of FAIR TRADE. SHIFT stands for Sharing, Healing, Implementing Fair Trade
