Just What Is A Presbytery?

Seattle Presbytery

Well, the description of which I am most fond is, “All of the churches together.”  How then can we be presbytery if we simply just don’t know one another?  In order to foster new ways of building relationships between the presbytery and churches, as well as churches with one another, we are beginning a new project to train individuals who will serve as relational contacts  between the presbytery and the churches of the presbytery (as well as contacts between the churches themselves). Our first  training event took place last week (Thursday March 24) from 7-9 pm.  More training opportunities will be coming for those interested in participating.

The Book of Order requires that presbyteries regularly consult with the Sessions of all the churches of the presbytery.  More importantly, since we are in ministry together it is essential that we develop genuine relationships between the churches, and in relationship with the presbytery as a whole.

Sadly, for many years the intentional development of these relationships has been neglected in general, and even the required formal consultations have been neglected.  Early in my work with the presbytery I was tasked (by Scott and COM) with the development (or redevelopment) of a process to foster genuine relationship between the churches and the presbytery, and to develop a method to return to appropriate consultations with our Sessions.

I have been working with the COM to develop these processes  building on the foundation Corey left behind when he left for North Puget Sound, and then further developed in my work with Corey when I moderated North Puget Sound's COM.

Shelley Dahl, a member of COM, has been tasked with the job of recruiting people who are willing to build a relationship with a church other than their own and work with COM to foster deeper relationships between our churches and churches with the presbytery. The first group just received their training, more groups and training are yet to come.  Our goal is to eventually have one or more people in active relationship with each church and fellowship (other than their own), fostering relationships and communication.

Perhaps this type of relational ministry (without having to serve on a committee) is of interest to you. Or perhaps you know someone who would be a good fit for this kind of ministry.   Please drop me a note with contact information and I’ll connect you or the person you suggest with the opportunity to train for this adventure in relationships.
