In other words, in order to ensure that we get to the heart of the matter when we’re together as a presbytery, we decided that instead of creating another Spirit (for the moment), we’d create a new format for our presbytery meeting papers that communicates the most important things that are going on in our presbytery. Meaning is now front and center.

Reflections on November Presbytery Meeting

Seattle Presbytery

By Rev. Scott Lumsden, Executive Presbyter

Our meeting last night was a mixture of remembrance, celebration, and preparation. The meeting began appropriately with a time of remembrance for our dear sister Madeleine Brenner, who, after serving this presbytery faithfully for the past decade plus (and in nearly every capacity), was suddenly taken away from us on October 25. Moderator Rev. Dale Sewall, Rev. Sara Koenig, and I all shared memories of her life and service and reflected on what her legacy means to our presbytery now. For those who would like to hear some reflections on her life, you can watch her memorial here on UPC’s website, and read Dale's and my remarks here

Our time of remembrance moved appropriately to worship as Rev. Dale Sewall reminded us to trust Jesus above all else, and the MIPC music ministry led us in song. Our time of communion extended into the community hall as we shared a (more than) delicious fall dinner.

Resuming our work as presbytery, our hearts were challenged to consider the Roma people and the mission work of Doug & Liz Searles. We acted on several nominations as we officially voted to make Elder Bruce Manger moderator of presbytery for 2012, and Rev. Vonna Thomas our new vice moderator. We thank you both for your willingness to serve us in this capacity; and we give God thanks for your ministry to the presbytery.

We also examined and approved the ordination of Angela Miksovsky to her call as associate pastor/tentmaker, to Mt. Baker Park Presbyterian Church. Pastoral transitions were honored as well in the welcoming of Rev. Roger Nicholson as Interim Pastor to Overlake Park Presbyterian Church and a goodbye was offered to Rev. Wes Nordman of Woodland Park Presbyterian Church. Wes served as Co-Moderator with Madeleine Brenner for two years and was instrumental in refocusing the work of COM in a time of transition – thank you Wes, and God's deep blessings to you in your new call.

Last, we were challenged to think about our future in a discussion about affiliation. It was clear in the conversations in the pews and in some of the comments that there are still many discussions to be had as a presbytery about the challenges we face as a larger church. But it is encouraging that despite these challenges for us as a larger church, there is a deep desire to maintain relationships within and across our presbytery.

September Meeting Recap

Seattle Presbytery

By Aaron Willett, SeaPres Communications

On September 20th the Seattle Presbytery met at the newly completed North Point Church in Poulsbo. Many of us enjoyed a delightful ferry ride across the water on what was a beautiful late-summer day.

The members and staff of North Point were gracious hosts and treated us to "Jesus Food"--a meal they regularly serve to the high schoolers across the street from the church.

Through our examinations for ordination we joined in celebration with those whom God has newly called into ministry.

  • Kelle Brown has been ordained to serve in validated ministry as the Executive Director of the Daughters of Zelophehad, a Christian transitional program for the transformation, restoration and healing of women and children in crisis.
  • Jennie Barber has received and accepted the call to serve as Associate Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, Tennessee. She will be ordained on October 7th, at UPC.
  • Natasha Hicks has been called by our own Mt. View Presbyterian Church to serve as their new minister.

We also enjoyed hearing how God is at work in the lives of Dan Hutchinson and Michael Yonkers as they passed from inquiry to candidacy and as they continue to explore their own sense of call to ministry.

During worship, Rev. Sheri Edwards Dalton preached on the power of ties that bind us together and her own personal sense of loss over the closing of her home church, Bethel Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Dr. Gerishon Kirika honored us with greetings from the Presbyterian University of East Africa in Kikuyu near Nairobi, Kenya.

In our pre-presbytery meeting members of the Presbyterian Fellowship reflected on the August Gathering of the Fellowship. Their slide presentation is available to download here.

May God bless you in your ministry until we gather again on Nov. 15th at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church.

Peace,

-aaron

The pre-presbytery event at Tuesday's presbytery meeting will include an overview of some important changes to our Form of Government in light of nFOG. This will be led by Rev. Strong will be using his summary of these changes that were included in the presbytery packet and online (some print copies will also be available at the meeting). March Meeting Reflections

Seattle Presbytery

The March meeting of Seattle Presbytery began with the welcome of two long laborers in the gospel, Pastor Jose Corado (of Inglesia Restauracion) and Pastor Pioux Canta (Christ Our Foundation). Both pastors and their fellowships have been ministering in the presbytery for some time, though their ordinations had not been officially recognized. Thus with great joy, Seattle Presbytery voted to recognize their ordinations and welcome them into the presbytery as ministers of Word and Sacrament in the PC(USA). We are richer as a presbytery for their contribution and service with us.

Inquirer Rebecca Arrowsmith was examined on the floor of presbytery, and has been approved to proceed to candidacy.

The evening's worship was led by Rev. Sandy Hackett (preacher) and included our newest minister members, Rev. Jose Corado and Rev. Pioux Canta, who presided at the table for communion.

After Standing Rules were adopted, the attention of the floor was fixed upon a number of amendments to our Book of Order, including an amendment to change G-6.0106b (commonly known as the fidelity and chastity clause relating to standards for ordination). The vote was 103 Yes, 126 No, and 4 Abstain, resulting in the failing of the amendment. The national vote is currently 61 Yes and 38 No (99 presbyteries reporting with 74 presbyteries still to record votes).

The last part of the meeting was taken up with committee reports and ordination exams for Eliana Maxim and Linda Fowler. Upon ordination, the presbytery looks forward to Eliana's service as Associate Executive Presbyter for Multicultural Ministry. Linda will be serving as Hospice Chaplain at Providence Hospice in Seattle.

Our next meeting will be hosted by Lake Burien Presbyterian Church. And we offer a generous thank you to Steel Lake Presbyterian Church for hosting such a wonderful meeting.

Scott Lumsden, Executive Presbyter
