Spirituality. It’s a word mainstream Christians don’t often use. Yet the Christian faith offers many ways of connecting to the hope and joy and compassion of God. Guest speaker, Dr. Wendy Farley, professor of Christian Spirituality at San Francisco Theological Seminary, unites her lifelong study of spiritual practices with a deep concern for the distress of today’s world in two lectures at Newport Presbyterian Church.

Many people are struggling—with our political climate or with personal distress. It is easy to become discouraged or to be consumed with anger or hostility. She will speak about practices that help us keep a hopeful and even joyful heart even as we face difficult issues.

On Friday Dr. Farley will speak about terrible times in the Old and New Testament and how the beauty and compassion of the divine are especially glimpsed in the midst of trauma and destruction. Talk begins at 7:30 p.m. with refreshments afterwards.

On Saturday, she will explore practices of beauty and compassion that might help us take awareness of God’s universal love and compassion into our hearts and bodies. We will learn about specific practices and have a chance to try them out. Come at 9:00 for a light brunch. Talk begins at 9:30 a.m.
