A CONVERSATION ON RACE AND EQUITY IN THE SEATTLE PRESBYTERY

Thursday, February 20, 2020
7pm at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church

From Tali Hairston, Dir. of Community Organizing, Advocacy, and Development

There are certain axioms of life we know to be true. One is what ever truly matters should be measured. Another axiom I often reference is that progress on any issue takes consistency, and consistency takes commitment. Thank you Russell Wilson!

On this Thursday, the 20th, the Race and Equity Task Force invites you to another working session at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church where we will continue to make progress on issues of race. All are invited.

From Haley Ballast, Seattle Presbytery Race & Equity Task Force

"...for the JOY set before him he endured the cross..." Hebrews 12:2

If I knew I was headed toward something excruciatingly painful, I am fairly certain that fear would be the dominant response. "For the fear set before her, Haley endured a root canal." But the author of Hebrews tells us that joy, and not fear, was Jesus' focus on his path to the cross. Excuse me Jesus, I have so many questions! Joy? What joy? Why? How?

My work with the Race & Equity Task Force has been a journey with these exact questions. Fear is a very common response within predominantly white spaces when race and equity are brought to the forefront. But working together for justice and equity in the church and in our communities is not a root canal... it's the gospel! So I bring my questions to this gospel work: what is the JOY set before us when we work for racial justice? How do we set aside fear in favor of this joy?

I hope you'll join me and the other members of the Race & Equity Task Force as we consider these and other questions together this month at our second Conversation on Race & Equity in the Seattle Presbytery on Thursday, February 20 at 7pm at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church. Please join us as we continue this critical conversation together.

This event is sponsored by the Race and Equity Task Force of the Seattle Presbytery’s Executive Board. All are welcome.
